And today, Pinarello announces the next step in racing dominance, the Dogma F10.
The huge amount of data derived by the development of Pinarello's Bolide HR and Bolide TT frames was used to improve aero performances by a whopping 12.6%! For maximum advantage, the aero improvements focused on reducing the overall drag of the entire system - both bike and rider - for real world improvements well beyond the standards of wind tunnel testing alone. Most obvious to the eye, the down tube on the F10 is placed in front of the water bottles and seat tube to protect them from wattage reducing airflow. This dramatic new shaping decreases turbulence while also increasing power transfer, a real world result that can be felt on the first ride.
The front of the bike is the most important in terms of aerodynamics because it is the first part of obstruction, and it's magnified by everything behind. Therefore, even a small improvement in this area is crucial. The presence of the quick release lever, necessary for quick wheel changes, generates a big slipstream behind the dropout that increases drag. By modifying the shape of the dropout area, adding material where the slipstream is high, the F10 successfully reduces overall drag. This modification successfully reduced fork drag to 10%, depending on the day's wind conditions. The final design is an optimum compromise between aerodynamics and lowest possible weight.
Pinarello has studied and developed the concept of asymmetric design since 2009. When a rider pushes the pedals the majority of the forces act on the right side of the bike only. Therefore, traditional symmetric frames cause a reduction of the frame’s stiffness and an unpleasant, unsettling feeling in higher stress moments such as sprints, downhills, and out-of-the-saddle climbs. With the asymmetric design of the F10 the right side of frame and fork tubes is larger than the left side to optimally counteract the imbalance of forces for a more secure, faster bike. The result is a remarkable increase of 12% in stiffness and 16% increase of balance.
Carbon fiber is actually a composite material, a mixture of carbon fibers, carbon fabric, and resin. Its properties deeply depend on the carbon properties, and the F10 uses the very finest carbon from Toray, the world's most advanced carbon maker. In the Dogma F10 the main material used is Torayca T1100 1K, which ensures the highest tensile strength in the world. This choice contributes to increase the impact strength, to prevent breakages. But, layup, resin, and production methods are comparably important. The F10 successfully optimizes carbon construction along three mutually orthogonal twofold axes of rotational maximize efficiency, durability, and most importantly, ride feel.
What is clearly evident, first of all, is a 6.3% reduction of the frame weight compared to the already extralight F8. A Dogma F10 frame weights just 820 g (53cm, raw frame). Secondarily, all the values of specific stiffness typically measured are higher than the values of Dogma F8. Comparing two different frames without considering the effect of the weight could provide incorrect results because weight, indeed, has a significant influence on stiffness. The more material used the stiffer the frame ... but also heavier. Therefore, Pinarello uses specific stiffness, which is the value of the stiffness divided by the weight for a realistic comparison of the two frames without the influence of the weight. The end result, the specific stiffness of Dogma F10 is 7% higher than the Dogma F8.
The above numbers above are extraordinary considering that the comparison is against the Dogma F8, the previous standard for world's finest bike. But, technical specs are not easy to understand as they relate to real riding. feeling. What a rider most commonly perceives is the reactivity and the handling of the bike. Reactivity, defined as the frame’s quickness in transforming cyclist actions into forward motion depends especially on 2 factors: weight and stiffness. The lower weight of the Dogma F10 ensures quicker accelerations and decelerations, especially important while climbing or sprinting. The higher stiffness, especially of downtube, bottom bracket area, and chainstays leads to a better power transfer, less power losses. All the wattage generated by the rider goes directly to rear wheel and the road. Handling, defined as the capability to change direction quickly and corner precisely, mainly depends on the geometry (head tube angle, fork’s rake, wheelbase, etc.) and the stiffness of frontal part of the frame (head tube and fork). Geometry has been maintained same as Dogma F8, which has been judged by the world's most accomplished riders as very precise and responsive. Even the stiffness of the head tube and fork was increased. In other words, the theoretical advantages described by the numbers have been exhaustively confirmed by on-the-road tests in the most important laboratory of them all.
