Marco Pantani

20th Anniversary

780 gram Bianchi Specialissma !

A commemorative celebratation of il Pirata's spectacular 1998 Giro-Tour double

"Perhaps by chance you have witnessed a shooting star, a burning light that passes so quickly you are reluctant to name it

Yet, you know you have witnessed something decidedly special

Such is the light of star cyclist, Marco Pantani"

Widely considered one of the finest cyclists of his era and one of the finest climbers of any era, Marco Pantani won both the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia in 1998. Only the 6th ever Italian to win the Tour de France (after Ottavio Bottecchia, Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi, Felice Gimondi and Gastone Nencini), Marco is the last of only seven to accomplish the remarkable feat of winning both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in the same year.

In the late 1990's, Pantani's attacking style and aggressive riding turned him into a fan favorite. Nicknamed "il Pirata" (the pirate) due to his shaved head, bandana and earrings, Marco inherited the classic build of a slender mountain climber. His style was a contrast to the bigger, more powerful masters of the time trial including 5-time Tour winner of the same era, Miguel Indurain.

Although never testing positive, the Pirate was beset by doping allegations during his career. In 1999, he was expelled from the Giro due to irregular blood values. Though he was disqualified for "health reasons", it was implied that his high red cell count was due to the use of banned EPO. Following later accusations, Pantani went into a major depression from which he never recovered. Regrettably, Marco died in a hotel room in 2004 of an acute overdose of cocaine.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of this remarkable athlete's dual victories in the Giro and Tour, Bianchi very proudly presents a very limited commemorative edition of their unmatched climbing frameset, the Specialissma. Each frame is meticulously handmade and handpainted in the Pirate's unique celeste and yellow finish. Made of Ultra High Modulus carbon fiber mated to Bianchi's exclusive Countervaill® vibration dampening layup, each Specialissma is a one-of-a-kind frameset of state-of-the-art cycling technology.

Like the Bianchi MegaPro XL ridden by Pantani as leader of the magic MercatoneUno-Bianchi team that famous year, the Specialissma features an ultralight frame and fork system. The 1998 MegaPro XL was custom built in Bianchi's Reparto Corse workshop with superlight alloy tubes at the forefront of frame construction of its day. Now, the Specialissma uses the most advanced carbon engineering available today, the patented Countervail® technology that cancels 80% of the road vibrations due to its special fiber architecture and viscoelastic resins.

The Specialissma provides pure power and control thanks to Bianchi’s Countervail® ultralight carbon formula specifically tuned to smooth out the inherent edginess and bounce of all other ultralight frames.
